New plan will see Ontario government employees deliver home care

The Wynne government is getting into the business of providing home care directly, quietly creating a new provincial agency that could eventually serve hundreds of thousands of patients in Ontario, CBC News has learned.

The move would mean personal support workers (PSWs) become provincial employees. It also has the potential to take a significant portion of the $2.5 billion in annual publicly-funded home care away from the for-profit and not-for-profit agencies currently providing it.

Ontario should move quickly on welfare benefits: Editorial

For a group so fond of proclaiming its commitment to social justice, the Wynne government has done remarkably little to help some of the very poorest people in Ontario.

The basic rates for the province’s social assistance programs are far below the generally accepted poverty line, and the government hasn’t done much to change that.

Courts have laid strong foundation against recovering ATE insurance premiums

During settlement negotiations or at the end of trial, a successful plaintiff will expect to recover from the defendant some or all of the costs incurred in pursuing a claim. As defence counsel, it is necessary to consider whether all costs claimed by the plaintiff are truly recoverable disbursements.

Editorial: A question of justice

“Not only must justice be done; it must also be seen to be done.” It’s an adage that’s taken on a new meaning in Atlantic Canada when it comes to the composition of provincial Supreme Courts.

In an open letter to Canada’s justice minister Oct. 25, a group representing Atlantic trial lawyers called on Ottawa to follow its new diversity and merit-based process to ensure transparency and fairness with judicial appointments.
