Computing a disaster

The Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) has unleashed an unmitigated disaster upon the citizens of Ontario. While this has an immediate impact on only those directly involved with Ontario’s social assistance system, as well as those concerned with the erosion of our social safety net, the cost impact will be felt by the every taxpayer.

CUTS TO ODSP BENEFITS SET A NEW LOW FOR LIBERAL CYNICISM: NDP MPP FORSTER

By hiding a $100-per-month cut to ODSP benefits behind a flurry of anti-poverty rhetoric, the Liberals have set a new low for cynicism, said NDP Community and Social Services critic Cindy Forster today. Her remarks came after anti-poverty organizations like the Income Security Advocacy Centre told the Legislature’s Finance Committee that the surprise elimination of the Work-Related Benefit would harm working ODSP recipients.

LSUC getting four to five mortgage fraud complaints a month

From Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2014, the law society received a total of 4,000 complaints, a decrease from the 4,357 received in the period the previous year.

“We can’t call it a trend,” Lapper said, adding the number of complaints has fluctuated in the past.

Some 3,090 of the complaints received in that time period were against lawyers and 444 were against paralegals. The rest of the complaints related to applicants seeking to become lawyers or paralegals. http://www.canadianlawyermag.com/legalfeeds/

Insurers “blaming everyone else,” says broker

One outspoken broker added his voice to another on the attitude insurance companies take when it comes to rising claims costs.

“Insurers are blaming everyone else and not taking responsibility,” Mike O’Grady, broker/owner of O’Grady & Associates Insurance Services in Tillsonburg, Ont., told Insurance Business.
