Wild weather drags down SGI’s profit to $39.2M

Customers with safe driving records got $114.1 million in discounts through SGI’s Safe Driver Recognition and Business Recognition programs in 2013.  SGI also remained dedicated to promoting road safety through traffic safety education efforts in schools and communities around the province, province-wide child restraint clinics and partnership with law enforcement on monthly traffic safety blitzes.

Canada: Ontario Government’s Bill 171 Threatens Access To Justice For Personal Injury Plaintiffs

Bill 171 is currently in its relatively early stages, and has yet to pass its second reading. Given the possibility of a spring election, it is possible that Bill 171 will not become law. Should there be a subsequent attempt to reform the adjudication of accident benefits claims, we recommend that it take into account the access to justice concerns that adversely affect accident victims.

Repeal law defining ‘serious impairment’ of ‘important function’ in auto lawsuits, Ontario lawyers’ group says

 
The Ontario Trial Lawyers’ Association is calling on the Ontario government to repeal an auto insurance regulation that defines “permanent serious impairment of an important physical, mental or psychological function” for the purpose of lawsuits for health care costs resulting from injuries from vehicle operation.

FSCO seeks feedback on draft of priorities for 2014

On Tuesday, FSCO confirmed that it will be accepting licence applications from service providers that invoice auto insurers starting May 1 and that licences will be required as of Nov. 1 this year.

It will also continue working out a minor injury treatment protocol, according to the draft. “The protocol will inform the Superintendent when developing a revised Minor Injury Guideline,” it says.

Fighting Back Against Rising Bodily Injury Severities

 
According to a recent study by the Insurance Research Council, the costs associated with bodily injury claims has exceeded the rate of inflation during the period of 2007-2012.  While this is an interesting statistic, perhaps it would behoove us to take a deeper dive into this trend to try and shed some light on what insurers can do to improve outcomes.
