Lumbar Spine Injuries

Spinal injuries can arise out of a variety of traumatic events, but automobile accidents are a leading cause.  The reason that injuries to the neck, back and spine are common in car accidents is that the impact during an accident strains the muscles and ligaments in the back, and the facet joints sustain the brunt of the force.  Whiplash, compression fractures, disc herniation and lumbar spinal injury can result from this action, and can occur even in low-speed collisions, such as fender-benders.

A Neuroscientist’s Diary of a Concussion

One evening in April, driving home from a university function, I was stopped in freeway traffic caused by roadworks somewhere up ahead when I felt a massive jolt. The back of my head hit the headrest, then my head lurched forward and I felt something hit the inside of my forehead with a squishy blow. Then my head snapped back and slammed into the headrest a second time. I didn’t feel any pain at first, just a stunned sense of disruption.

Canada needs affordable alternatives to opioids, health groups urge

CALGARY—An interim report released at a pain management conference suggests the best way to cut down on opioid addiction is to not prescribe the drugs in the first place.

Michael Heitshu, chairman of the Coalition for Safe and Effective Pain Management, says a lack of affordable alternatives for pain relief in Canada is partly behind an over-reliance on opioids and rising addiction rates.
