Reduce communication-related claims by understanding cognitive bias

Understanding cognitive biases can help reduce communication-related claims, which are the biggest source of malpractice claims. While many cognitive biases are dealt with by following some common sense principles, others are not as obvious. From anchoring effect to decision fatigue, knowing how your client makes decisions can help you build rapport with your clients, effectively give recommendations, and help ensure you and your client are on the same page.

The Ontario Ministry of Finance, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO), the Coalition Representing Health Professional Associations in Ontario Automobile Insurance Services and insurance companies consulted on this report. ​

LAT awards compensation denied by insurance companies

Last week the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT) released an important decision in favour of one of our clients that will help other severely injured accident victims. The LAT handles disputes whereby injured individuals have been denied accident benefits by their auto insurance companies.

Many at risk of financial ruin after an injury

The Bank of Canada says the number of households that owe at least 3.5 times their gross income has doubled since before the financial crisis, reports the Globe and Mail. For many, their large mortgages have pushed them into a “high-wire act with no safety net,” according to the article. A Manulife survey found that 25 per cent of people have saved just $1,000 for emergencies, says the Globe.

How quickly can you see a doctor? Study shows Canada lags behind other nations on timely access

Canada lags behind other well-off nations when it comes to timely access to health care, according to an influential survey of patients in 11 countries, including the United States.

Canadian patients reported more trouble scoring same-day or next-day appointments with their family doctors than patients in any country but Norway, which tied Canada for last place.
