For the record, I’m not talking about ability. Rather, I’m referring to experience and specialties. Most lawyers worth their salt are competent in interpreting the law—they tend to know a little bit about a lot of areas of the law—but the importance of specialization cannot be overstated.

The Ontario government announced Thursday it is “reviewing” 35 recommendations on auto insurance form made by the former head of the province’s government-run workers’ compensation insurance system, the same day an insurance defence lawyer warned that some of those recommendations are “extraordinary” and will have most lawyers “not sleeping at night.”
Lawyers say that while new changes to the rules around referral fees will likely bring increased transparency and clarity to the referral process, it remains to be seen how the new rules will be enforced.
